Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage (Nuad Bo Rarn), also known as Thai yoga massage, or the “lazy yoga”, boasts a rich history dating back centuries. This unique system blends acupressure, Ayurvedic principles from India, passive yoga postures (yoga-like stretches) and elements of reflexology.
The massage is performed on a mat on the floor, with the client wearing loose-fitting clothing. Passive yoga stretches are gently manipulating the body into various positions to improve flexibility and range of motion. Therapist also uses their thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, and even feet to apply deep pressure along the Sen lines. Sen lines, called ch’i in Chinese and prāṇa in Indian philosophic traditions, are at the core of the Thai massage philosophy, being the energy channels carrying vital life force throughout the body. Any blocks along the Sen lines are deemed to be at the root of many health problems so Thai massage is tasked with unblocking the flow of energy, thus improving the health. Intensity of acupressure and stretching is adjusted to the client’s flexibility and needs making this technique suitable to most people. Besides improved flexibility, this massage technique helps to reduce stress and anxiety, alleviate muscle tension and pain, improve circulation and invigorate energy flow along the Sen lines with all the secondary beneficial effects on health of body and mind. Traditional Thai massage does not involve use of oil, but variety of therapeutic balms are applied to specific pressure points to enhance the therapeutic effects of the treatment. Traditional Thai massage techniques are to various degrees incorporated in most other Thai massages, including most of oil massages on offer. Recommended duration of Traditional Thai massage is 60 or 90 minutes, but shorter and longer sessions are also available. Note that 30 minutes duration is insufficient for full-body massage, instead only back, neck and head are treated in that shortened time-span. The origins of Thai massage are traditionally ascribed to teachings of Buddha’s physician, Shivago Komarapaj, over 2,500 years ago. While there’s a clear influence of ancient Ayurvedic and Chinese medical practices on Thai massage, concrete evidence of its ancient roots are found in texts such as the “Naturopathic Medicine” manuscript, dating back to the 14th century, which detail massage techniques and their connection to Traditional Thai medicine, and murals in temples such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Umong, dating back to the same period, depicting variety of massage techniques used at the time. Thai massage was traditionally seen as a sacred practice, often performed by monks in temples. Today, it’s a widely recognized and sought-after therapy practiced worldwide with many schools of Thai massage, with Wat Pho being the most famous among them. In modern times, science has validated Thai massage techniques’ health benefits through many scientific papers.
Thai Stretch massage is the Traditional Thai massage with increased focus on and higher intensity of stretching compared to basic Traditional Thai massage variety.
It is more suitable to clients with more flexible body types, such as athletes, intent on maintaining or improving their flexibility. Besides being more intense it provides all the benefits provided by Traditional Thai massage. Due to intensity 60 minutes session is recommended but longer sessions are also possible.
Thai foot massage, also known as Thai reflexology, is a therapeutic practice that combines elements of Traditional Thai massage with reflexology principles.
It draws influences from Chinese reflexology and Indian Ayurvedic practices. Therapists use their thumbs, fingers, knuckles, forearms, elbows and specific wooden sticks to apply pressure to reflex points on the feet. These points correspond to various organs and systems in the body which are thus, by proxy, also stimulated. Hence the aim of Thai foot massage is to treat the entire body by focusing on the feet. Stroking, kneading and circular movements of fingers and sticks on the muscles of the feet and gentle stretching and rotations of feet and ankles are among the used techniques. Lower legs are also treated while longer treatments also involve work on neck and shoulders. Oils and balms are used to facilitate smooth movements and provide additional nourishment to the skin. By stimulating the reflex points on the Sen lines, Thai foot massage helps balance the energy flow in the body and achieve a sense of deep relaxation. It can aid in detoxifying the body, improving the function of internal organs and reducing stress and anxiety. It’s advisable for individuals with serious health concerns to consult a healthcare professional before undergoing this type of massage. People with severe circulatory issues, infections, or fractures in the feet and lower legs, should avoid Thai foot massage. Intense foot massage is also not advised in pregnancy.

Thai Oil Massage

Thai Oil massage is a full-body therapeutic form of massage that combines techniques of traditional Thai massage with long gliding motions along the Sen lines, facilitated by the use of essential massage oils. Unlike Traditional Thai massage, which is performed on the mat on the floor, Thai Oil massage is performed on a massage table.
While many elements of Traditional Thai massage are incorporated, focus is on gliding motions instead of the more static and pointed acupressure. Compared to Traditional Thai massage, Thai Oil massage is more passive form of treatment and, depending on intensity, can also be more relaxing. Desired intensity is communicated to the therapist before the massage. Massage typically starts with acupressure through the towel covering the body, using fingers, palms and knees, to prepare the body for the oil massage. Then the therapist applies oil on the skin and works with her fingers, palms, elbows, and forearms on various parts of the client’s body, including the back, neck, shoulders, legs, feet and arms, using long gliding motions, circular motions, kneading, stroking and other techniques. Special attention is given to areas of tension and muscle knots. Stretching techniques are intermixed but, for the most part, reserved for the final phase of the treatment. At the end of the treatment excess oil is removed from the body with towel. Thai Oil massage helps to induce deep relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety. By relieving muscle tension and improving circulation, it can alleviate chronic pain and discomfort, particularly in the back, neck, and shoulders. Enhanced blood flow and lymphatic drainage can help to detoxify the body and promote healing. Essential oils can, through hydration and nourishment, provide therapeutic benefits to the skin. Individuals with certain health conditions, such as severe skin allergies, infections, or recent surgeries, should avoid Thai Oil massage. Recommended duration of Thai Oil massage is 60 or 90 minutes, but shorter and longer sessions are also possible. Note that 30 minutes duration is insufficient for full-body massage, instead only back, neck and head is treated in that shortened time-span.
Relax Oil massage is a therapeutic and soothing massage that primarily aims to induce deep relaxation and provide stress reduction.
Although not the primary focus, the massage techniques used also help to ease muscle tension and muscle pain, but intensity of the pressure and techniques used are more relaxed and enjoyable for the body. Therapeutic oil massage techniques like long gliding motions, circular motions and kneading are used, but massage is performed at comparatively slower pace, light to medium pressure, to enhance relaxation and allow the recipient to unwind completely. Relaxation can be enhanced with addition of essential aromatic oils to the base oil, adding therapeutic effect to the skin and pleasant, calming fragrance to the massage room. The session ends with some basic stretching routines and a few minutes of rest, allowing the client to absorb the benefits of the massage. Through stress reduction on both body and mind Relax Oil massage promotes improved sleep quality, enhanced mood and circulation. With regular treatments it also helps maintain overall well-being of the body. Recommended duration of Relax Oil massage is 90 minutes, but shorter and longer sessions are also possible, depending on client’s preferences.
Aroma Oil massage, or aromatherapy massage, combines the benefits of massage therapy with the aromatic and healing properties of essential oils.
It draws on Relax Oil massage with added focus on aromatic oils, mixed in with base oils before being applied on the body. Different aromatic oils have different properties, such as calming, pain reducing, antimicrobial and circulation boosting. Slow paced, lighter pressure motions are used for applying the oil mixture on the skin, while the pleasant fragrance of aromatic oil enriches the ambience of the room. Commonly used essential oils include lavender and ylang-ylang for relaxation, stress relief and sleep improvement, peppermint for invigoration and muscle pain relief, eucalyptus for respiratory relief and muscle pain, chamomile for its relaxation and anti-inflammatory properties, rosemary for improved circulation and pain relief, and citrus oils like orange and lemon for mood enhancement and energizing effects. While Aroma Oil massage is typically combined with the slow motions of relax massage it can also be combined with stronger massage, like Thai Oil massage or Deep Tissue massage, depending on the client’s needs. Therapeutic effect provided by the Aroma Oil massage is enhanced with inhalation of aromatic scents making this massage ideal for those who seek refuge from the physical and mental stress. Sleep quality, enhanced mood, circulation and muscle tension are also among the benefits of aromatherapy. Recommended duration of Aroma Oil massage is 90 minutes, but shorter and longer sessions are also possible, depending on client’s preferences.
Hot oil massage combines the therapeutic benefits of warmed oils with Thai oil massage techniques to relax the body and nourish the skin.
The warm oil more easily penetrates the skin and helps to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and leave your skin feeling hydrated and rejuvenated. Hot oil massage is performed with warmed up base oils like almond and coconut, but a blend of base oils with essential, aromatic oils can be used to enhance relaxation and provide a luxurious experience. Suitable for stress relief, reducing stiffness, and promoting overall well-being, it’s a perfect way to unwind and recharge.
Deep Tissue massage is a variant of Thai Oil massage with specific aim of providing relief from chronic muscle tension, pain, and stiffness.
It involves a combination of firm pressure and targeted muscle manipulation with some Traditional Thai massage stretching techniques. This technique focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue to address knots and stiffness. The therapist uses their fingers and thumbs for pinpointed pressure at specific areas of discomfort, knuckles are used to apply deeper pressure over a larger area, while elbows and forearms are utilized to apply the deepest pressure to tackle the knots across broader muscle groups. It’s crucial to communicate to the therapist the level of pressure a client is comfortable with. If needed, level of pressure can also be adjusted during the therapy. Deep Tissue massage helps alleviate chronic pain by targeting deep-seated muscle tension and breaking down adhesions. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, sciatica, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders. Other benefits include improved mobility, enhanced circulation, and, through the release of endorphins, sense of deep relaxation and stress relief. Deep tissue work can sometimes lead to temporary soreness. Drinking plenty of water after the massage can help flush out toxins and promote healing. This massage is ideal for athletes, individuals with chronic muscle pain or anyone seeking to release significant muscle tension. Recommended duration of Deep Tissue massage is 60 minutes, but durations of 90 and 120 minutes are also possible, depending on specific needs.
Back, Neck & Head massage uses all the techniques of Thai Oil massage, working on the Sen lines with long gliding and circular motions, but full attention is given to upper back part of the body, i.e. back, neck and head.
It focuses on relieving muscle pain, tension and stiffness in the lower back, upper back, neck and head areas. It is ideal for individuals with sedentary lifestyles or jobs that involve prolonged sitting, typically working with computer. It is also recommended for people experiencing chronic neck and upper back pain, sciatica, or suffering from headaches or migraines, or seeking relief from prolonged exposure to mental stress, all ailments typical of the present day. Back, Neck & Head massage helps alleviate pain and discomfort in the back, neck, and head caused by muscle tension and stiffness, it can reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines, help correct postural imbalances by relieving muscle tightness, reduce stress levels, improve sleep and enhance blood flow through the stiff areas thus promoting healing and reducing inflammation. Recommended duration of Back, Neck & Head massage is 60 minutes, but shorter and longer sessions are also available, depending on specific needs.

Swedish massage is one of the most widely practiced types of massage therapy. It involves a variety of techniques designed to relax the entire body, improve circulation, and relieve muscle tension.

The techniques used in Swedish massage include long strokes that glide over the skin to warm up the muscles, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Kneading, rolling, and squeezing movements are used to break up muscle knots and improve flexibility. Rhythmic tapping or pounding is used to stimulate muscles, increase blood flow, and invigorate the body. Deep, circular rubbing movements are used to break down scar tissue and realign muscle fibers. Rapid, shaking movements are used to relax and loosen muscles and soothe nerves.

Benefits of Swedish massage include deep relaxation and stress reduction, enhancing circulation, easing of muscle tension and soreness, and flushing out toxins through improved lymphatic drainage.

Swedish massage is recommended for athletes and more generally for people experiencing muscle tension or soreness or seeking stress relief.

Recommended duration of Swedish massage is 60 minutes, but 90 minutes session is also possible.

Prenatal massage is a specialized form of massage therapy adapted to the needs of pregnant women. Many massage techniques, positions and pressure points involve risk for the health of a pregnant woman or her baby and are consequently not recommended or strictly avoided. Pregnant woman must not lie on her stomach, but must lie on her side and her back, strong and persistent pressure and extensive foot massage should be avoided as well as prolonged treatments. Foot massage is especially delicate as feet are where the Sen lines converge and where stimulation of specific points translates into stimulation of various internal organs, including uterus. Trained therapist will avoid sensitive spots and ensure the safety of both pregnant woman and her baby.

Prenatal massage targets common problem areas in pregnancy such as the lower back, hips, legs, and feet. Techniques used are gentle and slow strokes, gentle kneading and compression. Massage of the back is performed with client lying on her side with upper leg comfortably resting on the large cylindric pillow.

Prenatal massage alleviates pain and discomfort in the back, neck, hips, and legs associated with pregnancy, promotes relaxation and mental well-being, enhances blood flow, reducing swelling and edema, helps decrease fluid retention, particularly in the legs and feet, improves sleep quality and mood while reducing feelings of depression.

Prenatal massage is not recommended to last longer than 60 minutes.

Heat Therapy

Hot Stone massage is a massage therapy that involves the use of smooth, heated stones typically made of basalt, a volcanic rock with high capacity of heat retention.

The warmth of the stones helps relax the muscles, enhancing the therapist’s ability to apply deeper pressure without causing discomfort to the client.

Hot stones of different sizes are heated to a comfortable temperature between 50 and 60°C and placed on specific points on the back, neck, palms, legs and feet to warm up and relax the muscles. Heat of the stones is adjusted to the level of comfort of the client as each individual has different level of heat tolerance. While some stones remain stationary, others are used as extensions of therapist’s hands to perform massage strokes. Once the heat from the stones penetrates deeply into the muscles and joints, therapist will apply massage techniques from Thai Oil and Deep Tissue massages with each massage stroke made more penetrating and effective on the heated body.

The heating effect of basalt stones in Hot Stone massage significantly enhances the efficiency and comfort of the massage. Heat from stones induces muscles to relax and enhances blood circulation which in turn reduces stiffness and soreness. This makes muscles more receptive to pressure allowing the therapist to use deeper techniques with less resistance, enhancing the effectiveness of the massage without causing pain. Heat also helps to soften the connective tissue, surrounding the muscles, making it easier to stretch and manipulate. It is also a natural analgesic which helps to reduce pain and discomfort, making it easier for clients to tolerate and even enjoy deeper pressure. The increased blood flow and heat can also stimulate the body to release toxins.

Hot Stone massage is ideal choice for deep relaxation, improved flexibility and circulation, stress reduction, improved sleep quality and relief from chronic muscle pain. While Hot Stone massage can be practiced in any season it is specifically recommended for colder part of the year.

Recommended duration of Hot Stone massage is 90 or 120 minutes, but 60 minutes session is also available. 60 minutes treatment is somewhat abbreviated with more focus on upper body.

Herbal Compress massage (“Luk Pra Kob” or “Nuad Pra Kob” in Thai) is a very old massage technique tracing its origins back to 14th century Thailand, and likely much earlier.
It involves the use of heated compresses filled with a blend of therapeutic herbs. The herbs selected for the compresses vary but typically include ingredients known for their anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and relaxing properties such as lemongrass, turmeric, kaffir lime, ginger, camphor and eucalyptus. The compresses are steamed to release the essence of the herbs and then applied to the body using rolling, pressing, and circular movements along the Sen energy lines and on specific areas of tension. The heat and the herbal ingredients work together to penetrate the skin, muscles and joints making them more receptive and less sensitive to pressure and stretching. Herbal Compress massage provides a sensory experience that combines heat therapy with traditional massage, incorporating both oil and stretching techniques, offering therapeutic benefits that can enhance physical and emotional well-being. Herbal Compress massage can soothe muscle and joint pain, improve circulation, reduce stress and anxiety, stimulate the lymphatic system helping to detoxify the body and boost immunity. This type of massage can be particularly beneficial for those suffering from arthritis, muscle strains, or those seeking relaxation, detoxification and rejuvenation. Specific herbs from compresses may trigger allergies or sensitivities in some people in which case other heat therapies, such as Hot Stone or Hot Towel, are advised instead of Herbal Compress massage. Recommended duration of Herbal Compress massage is 90 minutes, but 120 minutes session is also available.
Hot Towel massage makes use of hot towels in massage therapy session to enhance the relaxation and therapeutic benefits of the treatment.
It can involve various massage techniques, such as Thai Oil massage or Deep Tissue massage, depending on the preferences and needs of the client, but the key distinguishing feature is application of heated towels at different stages of the massage. Towels are heated in a towel steamer and wrung out before being applied on the body of a client. The towels should be hot enough to provide therapeutic warmth but must not be as hot as to cause discomfort or burns. The massage therapist shall place the heated towels on specific areas of the client’s body, such as the back, shoulders, or feet, to help relax and loosen tight muscles. The heat from the towels helps to increase blood flow to the area, promoting muscle relaxation and making it easier for the therapist to work deeper into the muscle tissue without causing pain. While the hot towels are heating one area of the body, the therapist can massage other parts of the body that have been heated previously. Hot Towel massage is a recommended treatment for muscle relaxation and muscle pain. As with other therapies utilizing heat, Hot Towel massage improves circulation, reduces stress and induces release of toxins from the body. Recommended duration of Hot Towel massage is 90 minutes, but 120 minutes session is also available.

Scrub Massage

Scrub Massage, also known as body scrub, is a spa treatment that combines the benefits of exfoliation and massage to promote both skin health and relaxation.
The scrub removes dead skin cells, promoting skin regeneration and smoothness, while in combination with the oil massage, it stimulates circulation and achieves deep relaxation of the entire body. The massage starts with a scrub: a solution made with abrasive particles, like sugar and sea salt, mixed with aloe vera, honey, yogurt and natural exfoliant cremes, mixed together in a grinder to form a paste, is applied to the skin with gentle, circular motions to remove dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin. Scrub is followed by a shower to wash away dead skin and the scrub solution before a massage is performed. While Relax Oil massage is most commonly used after scrub, a type of massage to be performed is a choice of the client and can also be Traditional Thai, Thai Oil, Hot Stone or Herbal Compress massage. With removal of dead skin cells and opening of the pores Scrub Massage promotes health and rejuvenation of the skin, reducing the likelihood of acne and other skin blemishes and improving overall skin radiance. Open pores enable better absorption of essential oils used during the massage giving skin the nourishment it needs and a more healthy glow. Massage aspect of the treatment promotes relaxation, stress relief, better circulation and, depending of the massage techniques used, can also reduce muscle tension and pain. Scrub Massage can last 90, 120 or 150 minutes.

4-hand massage, as the name suggests, is a massage performed by two therapists working in synchronized and coordinated manner to provide an intense and unique massage experience.

Therapists’ movements are often mirrored on the left and right side of the back, legs, arms, feet and hands, or complemented and synchronized when therapists work on different parts of the body, to ensure a balanced and rhythmic flow of the process. Variety of oil massage techniques are used, including Thai Oil, Deep Tissue, and Reflexology.

Specific to this massage type is the ‘play’ on the mind which may find it difficult to focus on the continuous flow of many movements and multiple pressure points all at once so it ‘gives up’ by shifting its focus from the contact and the body to overall synergistic sensation. Thus, the mind transitions to a deeper state of relaxation and harmony through this unique sensory journey. By virtue of involving two pairs of hands 4-hand massage can cover the entire body more efficiently, with therapists often working on different parts simultaneously.

4-hand massage brings all the benefits of Thai Oil, Deep Tissue and foot massage techniques: the muscle tension and pain relief, improved blood flow, energetic rebalancing, and increased sense of deep relaxation, all with increased efficiency and higher massage intensity coming from the two pairs of hands.

Duration of 4-hand massage can be 45, 60 or 90 minutes. If you’re short on time but still crave a deep and relaxing massage, a 4-hand session can be a great option.
